Sustainability & Community Impact: Our Core Commitment
A Philosophy of Custodianship
A phinisi is a product of the natural world—born from the ancient ironwood forests of Sulawesi and Kalimantan, and destined to sail the pristine seas of the Indonesian archipelago. This is the heart of the Coral Triangle, the planet’s epicenter of marine biodiversity, spanning over 17,500 islands. At Phinisi Shipyard, we believe building these magnificent vessels comes with a profound responsibility of custodianship. Our commitment to sustainability is not an afterthought; it is a fundamental pillar of our business, ensuring 100% of our timber is SVLK-certified for legality and traceability under the mandate of Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry. We build legacies, and a true legacy must be sustainable for the environment and for the generations of guardians who depend on it. Phinisi heritage (UNESCO ICH)
Environmental Commitments: Protecting Our Oceans and Forests
We implement tangible, measurable policies to minimize our environmental footprint, from the forested hills of Bulukumba to the protected waters of Komodo National Park. Our approach is holistic, addressing every stage of a vessel’s life cycle.
- Certified & Sustainable Timber: We have a zero-tolerance policy for illegal timber. 100% of the wood used in our shipyard, including tropical hardwoods like Ulin (ironwood) and Teak, is certified under Indonesia’s rigorous SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu) program. This system, a key component of the EU’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) agreement, ensures every plank is legally harvested and fully traceable to a licensed concession. Furthermore, we are pioneering a reforestation program in partnership with local landowners in Bulukumba. For every mature tree harvested for a new build, we plant and nurture 10 new saplings, a commitment to cycles that span 50 to 100 years.
- Advanced Waste Management: Every vessel we build is equipped with a state-of-the-art, IMO-certified marine sanitation device (MSD), such as those from industry leader Tecnicomar. These systems treat all blackwater (from toilets) and greywater (from sinks and showers) to standards that exceed MARPOL Annex IV regulations, preventing any discharge of pollutants into sensitive marine ecosystems like the fragile reefs of Raja Ampat.
- Marine Conservation Partnerships: We are a proud corporate partner of the Coral Triangle Center in Bali and the Misool Foundation in Raja Ampat. We contribute 1% of the net profit from each vessel build to these organizations. This directly funds the Misool Ranger Patrol, which protects a 1,220 sq km marine reserve, and supports the Coral Triangle Center’s vital training programs for marine park managers from across Southeast Asia.
- Eliminating Single-Use Plastics: Our shipyard is a single-use plastic-free zone. We extend this policy to the vessels we deliver, providing clients with comprehensive operational plans that include onboard water filtration and remineralization systems, reusable containers, and sustainable provisioning guidelines. This includes practical advice for crew, such as sourcing produce from local markets using traditional banana-leaf wraps instead of plastic bags.
- Reduced Emissions and Efficiency: Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) hull analysis and the selection of modern, efficient engines from manufacturers like MAN and Yanmar, we ensure our phinisis achieve up to 15% greater fuel efficiency than vessels of a similar size built a decade ago. We also integrate sophisticated power management systems and high-efficiency solar arrays, capable of generating up to 5kW to power all hotel loads during daylight hours, minimizing generator use and carbon emissions at anchor.
A Circular Approach to Construction
Our commitment extends to minimizing waste during the build process itself. We operate on the principles of a circular economy, viewing every material as a valuable resource. Hardwood offcuts, for example, are never discarded. Larger pieces are used to create custom furniture and fittings for the vessel’s interior, while smaller scraps are donated to local artisans in Tanah Beru who carve them into souvenirs. Sawdust is composted and used in our reforestation nursery. We also prioritize the use of low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints, resins, and sealants to protect the health of our team and prevent chemical runoff into the coastal environment.
Community Commitments: Empowering the Keepers of the Craft
Our business is inextricably linked to the well-being of the Konjo people, the master shipwrights of South Sulawesi whose centuries-old craft was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. We believe our role is not as employers, but as partners in preserving this living heritage.
- Local Employment & Fair Labor: Over 95% of our 70+ skilled workforce are from the local communities of Ara, Tanah Beru, and Lemo Lemo. We provide stable, year-round employment with wages significantly above the regional average, offering security in a region where income can be seasonal. All employees are enrolled in the national BPJS Kesehatan (health insurance) and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (social security, accident insurance, and pension) programs, providing a comprehensive safety net for them and their families.
- Generational Apprenticeship Program: To ensure the UNESCO-recognized skills of phinisi building are passed down, we fund and manage a formal apprenticeship program. Master punggawa (master builders) from our team mentor young builders, often their own sons and nephews, for a full 18-to-24-month build cycle. This hands-on training passes down not just the technical skills of shaping ironwood with an adze, but the unwritten philosophies and oral traditions of their ancestors.
- Community Development Fund: We allocate 0.5% of each project’s total budget to a community development fund, managed in consultation with local village leaders (kepala desa). Recent projects have included upgrading classroom facilities and providing books for the local elementary school in Tanah Beru, improving access to clean drinking water infrastructure, and funding the purchase of new fishing nets for the Lemo Lemo cooperative after damage from the annual west monsoon storms.
- Supporting Local Artisans: For our interior fit-outs, we prioritize sourcing from local and regional artisans across the archipelago. This creates a ripple effect of economic benefit, from the weavers of Sumba creating custom ikat textiles for our cabins, to the woodcarvers of Jepara crafting intricate panels, and the coppersmiths of Boyolali hammering bespoke sinks and fixtures.
Upholding Sacred Traditions
The construction of a phinisi is a spiritual as well as a technical endeavor. We honor and facilitate the sacred rituals that have guided the Konjo builders for centuries. This begins with the *Lette’ Lette’* ceremony, where the keel is laid and blessed, and continues with offerings made at key stages of the build to seek harmony between the vessel, the forest, and the sea. We ensure the *punggawa* have the resources and time to conduct these traditions, which are central to the cultural integrity of the craft and were a key reason for its recognition by UNESCO. This respect for tradition ensures that every vessel we build is not just a hull of wood, but a living entity with a soul.
When you commission a vessel from Phinisi Shipyard, you invest in a project where a minimum of 60% of the build cost directly supports local Konjo artisans, their families, and their community. This is a tangible return that honors and protects the cultural and natural heritage of Indonesia, allowing you to build a yacht with a measurable, lasting, and positive impact.
